Sather's Eyes Send Thornton and Bulin Wall Packing

Calgary (CP) Pending league approval, the first official blockbuster trade of the 2009 year has people buzzing as franchise player Joe Thornton and longtime teammate Nikolai Khabibulin has been traded to the rival One Eyebrows. GM Khoo stated "This is a day of mixed emotions. Joe was the franchise's first selection in the entry draft and has lead the team in scoring the past 2 seasons. Ultimately though we decided it was best for both parties to take a new direction. He'll be the cornerstone of another franchise with a bright future that needs some stability. Nikolai had a bounce back year after a couple of tough seasons. His stock is higher than its been for a long time so we felt we had to capitalize on this opportunity when it came up. At the end of the day we felt this move was necessary to get us to the next step towards a league championship. "

The personnel coming back is nothing to look down upon either. Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Vokoun immediately fill in the void with some pros and cons in each area.

"Today we got younger without a huge drop off in skill. Pavel, we believe, can come close to what Thornton was able to provide. His multiple Stanley Cups should provide leadership to a team that needs some right now. Vokoun though is the key to this deal. He is capable of playing 70+ games and frankly his value is low right now. We believe he still is a top 10 goalie in the league that can regain his form in the second half of the season. In the past year, Sather's Eyes have gone under a dramatic transformation with a different emphasis. With only 2 years left in the league, some drastic measures had to be taken to be competitive. Let the dice roll."

Fearless Predictions: GDHL 2008-2009 Final Standings

Calgary (CP) What would the GDHL be without a little controversy to start the year? I wanted to stir the pot a bit with my predictions for the final standings for year's end. When I first started out this task, I was quite subjective in my approach. But since I know there will be some people emailing me about their respective standing, I tried use a more objective approach which surprised me a little when I finished the analysis.

Here's the process for each team:
1) I chose my projected starting line-up for the season.
2) I assigned a Pool Point value based on what they were capable of if they played all 82 games.
3) I then applied an injury factor based on player history or known injuries.
4) Finally I applied a final factor for bench players coming in to replace them.

A couple of things I noticed:
1) The spread amongst teams should be the closest ever.
2) For places 1-10 the spread is less than 200 PPts. This sounds like a lot but to put it in perspective, that is a difference of less than 10 PPts per player which is not insurmountable.
3) The loss of some key players could have huge ramifications. Case in point, Ken's team will suffer without Sundin who is a bankable 100 PPts.
4) Injuries were a huge factor that reduced people's potential by a lot. If players like Simon Gagne, Martin Havlat and others can stay healthy... watch out!

If anyone wants to "discuss" the breakdown for their individual team I can definitely email it to them. Without stalling any longer, here are my predictions for this year based on the current rosters:

1) Leaf Haters (Kevin) - 1672 PPts
2) One Eyebrow (Ihor) - 1651 PPts
3) Sather's Eyes (Victor) - 1636.5 PPts
4) Bear Skins (Mike) - 1581.5 PPts
5) GGopher (Jordan) - 1559 PPts
6) Whalers (Adam) - 1525.5 PPts
7) Boomers (Paul) - 1520.5 PPts
8) Sith (JW) - 1500.5 PPts
9) John Doe (Ryan) - 1498.5 PPts
10) Shamrocks (Trevor) - 1497.5 PPts
11) Flyin' Elbows (Mark) - 1448.5 PPts
12) Airborne Attitude (Ken) - 1397.5 PPts

Eyes Training Camp: Week 3

Calgary (CP) After opening training camp a few weeks ahead of the rest of the league, GM Khoo continued his off-season free agent frenzy by bringing in a combination of youth, grit, potential, and of course a familiar face.

Brandon Dubinsky was expected to battle for the forth line center position. But with the recent resigning of Eyes team captain Joe Sakic to a 1 year deal, Dubinsky will most likely see significant action with their minor league affiliate the Vulcan Mind Melds close to Calgary. "Its tough to take this news but I intend to build upon the strong rookie campaign I had and maybe get a call-up midway through." Brandon stated as he boarded the C-Train to Southgate Mall. "Have to go. My mom is picking me up at the terminal and we're going for ice cream."

Scottie Upshall battled some injuries last year but finished strong and Khoo expects him to see him challenge Brendan Morrison for playing time. "Scottie exemplifies what we've built here. Someone who isn't afraid to drop the mitts, can put the puck in the net, and is injury-prone."

David Backes continued his assent up the depth charts who is drawing comparisons to a younger Chris Kunitz. "David has all the makings of being a very productive player in the GDHL. Hopefully he'll see more time on the power play."

And finally, Khoo re-signed veteran Olaf Kolzig to a two-way, one-year deal. "We brought back Nik and Ollie to add depth and give our team in Vulcan a chance. They had a rough season last year, but should be able to step in quite nicely if one of our other two should falter."

Expect one more signing in the near future and finalize the Eyes' roster.

Eyes Training Camp: Week 1

Calgary (CP) With off-season moves in management that saw a lot of internal organizational changes, the Sather's Eyes opened camp this week with renewed optimism. After 3rd and 2nd place finishes in their first two years in the league respectively, GM Victor Khoo still knows there is a lot of work to be done if they want to catch their cross town rivals, repeat champions Leaf Haters!, to satisfy the fans.

"We know we have a good team but their needed to be a change in direction if we're going to catch them.", GM Khoo stated after the team's practice. "The Leaf Haters! have pulled off some good moves and will be a formidable opponent coming up. I think we've addressed our main concerns during the off-season and have really changed the make-up of our team." he continued referring to the upgrades in goaltending and the noticeable injection of youth.

"When we started, we had a lot of experience but perhaps not enough young legs. Right now, we have those legs and I believe we haven't dropped significantly in talent."

With 28 people at camp battling for 20 positions, the Eyes look to have 4 solid lines going into the season. Their defence though may come under some scrutiny after the block-buster trade that saw Huet + Pronger sent to the Whalers for all-star goalie Mikka Kipprusoff. "Losing a player like Prongs is always tough. He brought leadership on the ice and in the dressing room. But plain and simple we needed a No.1 goalie moving forward and believe that Wade is ready to take over the leadership part of the defence."

There is no question that the Eyes are deep down the middle which is fine with the coach. "Centers are the most versatile players usually. I have no qualms sticking a center on the wing, but obviously want to keep people at their natural position. Starting Sakic centering on the 4th line is insane, but we believe he can provide the leadership on what would make most people's top two lines."

Steve Sullivan is also making waves during his first on-ice sessions. "The back feels good right now and it'll be stiff tomorrow. I'm just glad to get back on the ice again." Steve was signed earlier this week in hopes of reviving his career once again.

Here's a look at possible line combinations that were tried during camp.

Arnott-Lecavalier-Morrow
Rolston-Thornton-D.Sedin
Kunitz-Richards-Perry
Connolly-Sakic-Morrison

Redden-Rozsival
Hainsey-Salo

Top 10: Things I Was Wrong About in the GDHL

Calgary (CP) Okay. I will be the first to admit when I'm wrong about my predictions. As much as I would like to think that I know the game and how its played, sometimes I get the blanket pulled from underneath me. In no particular order (and hence no numbering), here are 10 things I didn't foresee happening.

Ihor's Team Winning the GDHL This Year
Wow. Was I way off base here. After what I thought was a solid draft, Ihor finished in 6th place almost 300 PPts out of first. Of course this was triggered by Triska's fire sale early on, but I believe he knew that he didn't have a legit shot at winning this year.

Flyin' Elbows Competing for the Title
Ok. I think I get a mulligan on this one. I said that he would be competitive IF everyone stayed healthy. But realistically, even if everyone were healthy, Mark probably would be in the lower third anyways. The totally bombing of Gagne, Afinogenov, Roloson, Emery and Havlat hurt him.

Kane Isn't NHL Ready
Boy did this kid prove me wrong. I thought he was too small (5' 8", 160lbs) for the NHL level and thought that he wouldn't be ready for 2 more years. 72 points later and a lock for Calder makes me believe that Trevor will have an exciting team with both him and Toews in the stable.

Price Would Play Second Fiddle to Huet
Although I knew that he would be the goalie of the future for the Habs, I never thought that he would take the reigns over by trade deadline. Paul seems to have a sixth sense when it comes to evaluating talent on the Habs... or maybe its that since he's a fan he keeps an eye on them. Whatever the case, Price is a keeper for a long time to come.

Brad Richards is a 95 Point Player
Man this guy is so frustrating. One year after my trade with Ryan, it looks to be like a trade that was worked out even. I always thought Richards was capable of 95 points. Now I'm not sure whether he'll score 80!

Mike Ribeiro is a Bum
When Ryan announced the drafting of Mike Ribeiro in Round 5 of this years draft, I'll admit that I thought it was a waste of a pick. Going onto a 100+ PPt performance this season, I'm forced to eat my words. Well done Ryan!

Dan Cloutier Would Make His Triumphant Return
A very subtle move that shifted the balance of power early on. On the first day of free agency, I was going to sign Pascal Leclaire but instead went with Dan Cloutier believing him to have a better chance to be the No.1 since the emergence of Norrena in CLB. Guess who got Leclaire? Kevin. Almost 110 PPts including 9 SO later... man did I blow that one.

Rookies Would Not Have A Great Impact This Year
I've often thought that we were spoiled between the Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby years. I never thought that we'd get another bunch of rookies that could have an immediate impact in the league for a long time. But this year, there is Kane, Toews, Backstrom, Price, Niskanen, Enstrom, Mueller, and Gagne that will force me to re-evaluate my position on rookies. Although there are no immediate superstars in the this group right now, all of these guys most likely will be in a couple of years. My one parting shot to this is that NONE of the top 4 teams dressed a rookie for any significant period this season ;)

Malkin Needed Crosby to Be Successful
With so much attention being focused on Sidney, I thought that this was the big reason why Malkin had so much success last year. He wasn't playing against the opponents top players so he had a 'free ride'. After Crosby went down Malkin's production actually went up! Truly amazing and would be a Hart winner if not for Ovechkin and his even more ridiculous play.

Final GDHL Standings
Heading into the season, this is how I had things:
1. One Eyebrow (Ihor)
2. Leaf Haters! (Kevin)
3. Sather's Eyes (Victor)
4. Bear Skins (Mike)
5. GGopher (Jordan)
6. Flyin Elbows (Mark)
7. Boomers (Paul)
8. Whalers (Adam)
9. Airborne Attitude (Ken)
10. Sith (JW)
11. Shamrocks (Trevor)
12. John Doe (Ryan)

This is how it ended up:
1. Leaf Haters! (+1)
2. Sather's Eyes (+1)
3. Bear Skins (+1)
4. GGopher (+1)
5. Boomers (+2)
6. One Eyebrow (-5)
7. Airborne Attitude (+2)
8. Sith (+2)
9. Shamrocks (+2)
10. Whalers (-2)
11. John Doe (+1)
12. Flyin Elbows (-6)

Wasn't too far off but over-estimated the impact that Ihor, Adam and Mark's teams would have.

GDHL Rules: The 'Franchise' Player Tag

Calgary (CP) Its been many many months since I last posted. A lot of exams, work, and well I've been extremely busy. With the GDHL 2007-2008 season coming to a close, I wanted to get this article up to get some good discussion happening. I still have a back log of posts on the way that will be rolled out over the playoff time so we have stuff to talk about in the summer... including Final Team Report Cards *gulp*.

In any event, this will be a start of a series of articles that should spark debate on possible improvements in our next iteration of the GDHL. Here we will discuss with the concept of a "Franchise" tag, but first I'd like to define a term that I will use later one.

Elite Player - One that is realistically capable of leading their respective position in PPts for a given season within the time frame of this pool.

Basic Concept:
Before each season starts (after draft) each GM places a "Franchise" tag on 3 players for each team except their own. After all votes are tabulated, the 3 players with the greatest number of "Franchise" tag votes on each team will be the team's Franchise players (i.e. each team will have 3 Franchise players). In the event of a tie, the player with the greatest number of PPts the previous season will be used. During the season, whenever a trade is made involving a player with a "Franchise" tag, there must be an equal number of "Franchise" players exchanged between the GMs. Since the voting is done after the draft of each year, the "Franchise" tag for players can change from year to year.

Why Have a "Franchise" Tag?

I guess you could call it the "Kevin Kwasny" rule. No fault is put on Kevin since he has shown himself to be a powerhouse in the GDHL with 2 convincing victories, but this proposal will:
  • Prevent one team from having a boat load of elite players.
  • Prevent teams from having NO elite players.
  • To theoretically improve the equality and evaluation criteria for trades.
  • To keep all teams in the league competitive year after year.
  • Decrease GM inactivity.
As mentioned before, this is no slight on Kevin since he did not 'force' the other GMs to make the trades (although I'm still convinced he has some Jedi mind control technique he's perfected) but I'm going to use his team as an example.

Alex Ovechkin
Jarome Iginla
Evgeni Malkin
Marian Hossa
Sergei Gonchar
Dion Phaneuf

I'm sure everyone will agree that all 6 are elite level players. They will be on his team for the final 3 seasons of the league and he is a virtual lock to finish in the top 2 spots each successive year and win the dynasty prize.

Taking a look at other teams in the GDHL, there are some with only 1 or 2 elite player on their team which will greatly hinder their chances of being competitive with the rest of the league within the next 3 years. If a team isn't being competitive, what motivation does the GM have to work on his team? In an ideal world, the separation between first place and last would be 200 PPts, not 500 PPts. A 200 PPts spread averages out to be 10 PPts/player which someone can swallow. A 500PPts spread works out to a whopping 25 PPts/player which is insurmountable.

The Big Questions:
Do you think this will work?
Will it solve our problems?
Do we even have a problem to solve?

Leaf Haters and Skins Respond to Eyes Signings!

Calgary (CP) After a stale holiday season, it would appear that the race for the GDHL title just got a whole lot more interesting. On the heels of the news conference in which Sather's Eyes GM Khoo announced the acquisitions of both Cole and Havlat, the Leaf Haters were first to respond by nabbing All-Star defencemen Dion Phaneuf along with future Hall-of-Famer Brendan Shannahan.

Kevin Kwasny released the following statement:
"Even though we have 5 superstars on our team (Iggy, OV-1, Malkin, Gonchar and Hossa) it isn't enough. I want them all. Dion fits the bill and all other teams suck. There is no way I'm going to stand here letting teams with no talent in net and no talent up front beat me. With these moves, Mike should just write my name on the cheque!"

We thought that was the end of it until GDHL commish Mike managed to pry Datsyuk out of Ryan's hands. During the news conference of that trade announcement, Mike stated "There was no way I could sit here while my competition is making moves. All other teams suck. There is no way I'm going to stand here letting teams with no talent in net and no depth up front beat me. With these moves, I should write my own name on the cheque!"

GM Khoo was surprised by the calibre of players that were attained by both teams... but didn't expect either to go down without a fight. "I think all my good work has been counteracted by what transpired in the last 24 hours. In addition, the comments about my goalie situation hurt. That was cold man... cold."

Here's wishing every luck during the stretch run.

Havlat and Cole Landed!

Calgary (CP) This morning's press conference brought about the news that we've been waiting to hear which was leaked late last night. The Sather's Eyes have set their sights on Martin Havlat and Eric Cole to help them with their GDHL Title run.

"Today hopefully signifies to the rest of the league that we believe that the bunch of people in our dressing room can win it all this year without affecting the future too much. We're excited to get the game-breaking abilities of Havlat and the proven goal-scoring of Eric Cole that should provide the depth that we need for the playoff stretch."

Tucker, who was signed as a FA early in the season, has been largely a disappointment never looking the same after coming back from off-season surgery. Him along with goalie prospect Justin Pogge were packaged together in addition to a previously acquired 2nd round 2008 pick and a 4th round pick in 2009.

"Atkins drove a hard bargain, but ultimately I believe it was a fair trade for both parties. I paid a big price for rental players without giving up any of my own draft picks next year, while Mark improved his prospects for the upcoming season."

The health concerns with Havlat and Cole had to be brought up during the interview.

"Yes they haven't been the most healthy players historically. But I'm not asking them to be healthy all year... only half of one. They are too skilled for me to not take a chance on them."

When asked about the questionable goalie situation that has dragged down the Eyes all year long, Victor stated, "There were only a few goalies out there that I wanted. None were available. My situation isn't ideal but it'll do for now. If Conklin, Ellis and Kolzig can rotate behind Hasek in the #2 spot, I think we won't loose too much ground in that area over the course of the next 3 months."

Here is the projected starting lineup, pending league approval of the trade:

Morrow-Richards-Lecavalier
Havlat-Thornton-Sedin
Perry-Arnott-Bertuzzi
Legwand-Comrie-Cole

Pronger-Weber
Redden-Blake
Spacek-Komisarek

Hasek
Conklin

With the prospect of Sakic and Morrison returning from injury in the next 6 weeks, it should be a good finish right until the end.

GDHL Rumours: Sather's Eyes Acquire Key FA's For Final Push?

Calgary (CP) There is buzz around the league that GM Khoo has pulled off a "significant move to increase their chances of capturing a GDHL title" as it was bluntly put. A news conference has been scheduled for a formal announcement, but there has been league speculation as to who they have acquired.

"All I can say at this moment, is that we are very optimistic about our chances to win this year and it was the right time to pull the trigger." GM Khoo said when pressed for a statement.

"I think this sends the right message to the fans that we are willing to make key moves to put us into position."

One has to wonder how much of a reflex reaction it might be due to the massive 20 player deal between GGopher and One Eyebrow completed last week?

"I'd be lying if I said it didn't affect my decision. But let's not forget that as of this morning Jordan was still 85+ PPts out of first. I'm unsure how much time there is left to catch us. Seriously though, my scouting staff and I have been looking for the right deal all year long. It has less to do with Jordan than it does with the Skins and Leaf Haters. Their teams are too good to just sit still. If we do that, I'm not sure if we have the endurance to run with those top tier teams. With these moves, pending league approval of course, it gives us that fighting chance."

So who could it be? Some goalie help would be welcome, but with the emergence of Ty Conklin it may be an area that is simply a band-aid solution right now and could wait until next year. With a couple of forwards on the shelf (Sakic and Morrison) the Eyes may look to add some depth which may be lacking. It is this blogger's opinion that the D would probably be left untouched since they have been solid all season long.

It'll certainly be a nice change of pace for Khoo, who usually spends his most time on drafting quality players and being reserved in his moves.

Waiting in anticipation...

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Sather's Eyes (Victor)

Calgary (CP) Before I go on, first I'd like to thank the faithful readers of my blog. Many good suggestions have come and I'm always looking for feedback. As for me, although I am temporarily in first place, these Report Cards are based on the stats as of the midway point of the season.

Click Here for Victor's Pre-Season Team Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
N/A

Analysis:
As I've pointed out to several other GMs, I really don't know how I'm amongst the leaders. I've tried many many times to obtain a number 1 goalie without anyone willing to budge. Perhaps this blog has to do something with it? I've been fortunate enough that my forwards and defence have been making up my ineptitude in net which I can only hope to continue until the end of the season.

Grades:
+ Forwards (A): Ranks 2nd in G, 2nd in A. With the injury to Sakic early on, the Eyes thought there would be a major drop-off in this area. Handzus has been a bum but with 8 players in the Top 50 PPt getters, the Eyes have been blessed with having a lot of depth despite Sakic on the IR.
+ Defence (A-): Three of the top 15 PPt defencemen are on the Eyes with Pronger having a GDHL MVP worthy season. I've had the luxury of rotating between Paul Martin, Brewer and Komisarek in the number 6 spot. By far my deepest position.
+ Goalies (D-): Ranks 10th in W, 4th in L. For every good, there is a bad... and this situation has been ugly. Hasek's groin problems along with the Caps inability to win had GM Khoo having to rotate between many marginal NHLers. This included Dan Ellis, Alex Auld, Patrick Lalime and now Ty Conklin.
+ Special Teams (A): Ranks 1st in PPG, 1st in PPA. Many GMs do not seem to value defencemen the way I seem to... and this is the sole reason why I want good ones on my team. PPP has been the category that I've been able to make up huge ground in due to the bonuses you get. Again, just compensating for my Goalies.
+ Goon Factor (A-): Ranks 1st in PIMs. Another area I've been able to score big in is having a tough team that take dumb penalties... thank goodness!
+ Overall (B+): Without a trade for a solid goalie, the Sather's Eyes will need some second string backups to perform if they are to have a chance.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Shamrocks (Trevor)

Calgary (CP) Now a shell of its former self, the Shamrocks have seemingly exploded their team in hopes of a better future. Has it worked?

Click Here to view Trevor's Pre-Season Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Tim Connolly
+ Jonathan Toews
+ Patrick Kane
+ Kari Lehtonen
+ Evgeni Nabokov
- Alexander Ovechkin
- Zdeno Chara
- Chris Mason
- Henrik Sedin
- Brian Rafalski
- Andrew Brunette
- Nic Antropov
- Petr Budaj

Analysis:
How the mighty have fallen. I really fail to see how the moves that he has made so far will improve his chances to win the pool in the next 3 years. IMHO, both his forwards and defence have gotten significantly weaker. I will agree though that in net he has improved vastly, but without a supporting cast, I'm skeptical of how high the Shamrocks will finish next year.

Grades:
+ Forwards (F): Ranks 12th in G, 9th in A. There are some people the Shamrocks can build around... starting with Kane, Toews and Richards. The problem is there are no established superstars that you can count on to produce every year. With exception to Richards, Trevor may have no other 100 PPt scorers.
+ Defence (D-): With exception to Hainsey, the Shamrocks no longer have a defencemen in the top pairing especially after losing Rafalski and Chara... two deals that have really puzzled me.
+ Goalies (C+): Got Nabokov for OV-1 but has failed to find a consistent 2nd goalie after having as many as 6 on his roster.
+ Special Teams (B): Ranks 6th in PPG, 5th in PPA. The bright spot of the Shamrocks has been the PP. Despite being near the bottom in total points, an astounding 46% of them come on the PP, which is a GDHL league high.
+ Goon Factor (B-): Ranks 4th in PIM. I like this team's overall toughness. An area that PPts could be made up.
+ Overall (C-): IMO, I don't think that Trevor will get too many bites from the leaders since a lot of his extra assets are of low value and the people with good upside are untouchable. A long summer may be ahead.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: John Doe (Ryan)

Calgary (CP) Key injuries, under-performers and little bench depth has Ryan vying for the dubious number 1 selection next year.

Click Here to view Ryan's Pre-Season Team Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
N/A

Analysis:
When you have a starting goalie that is injured, a former Rocket Richard winner scoring only 5 goals midway through the season, and a $7M man with only 25 points, it should be no surprise that John Doe is struggling. Combined with the fact that a person that will be on the IR for 4 months is still in the starting lineup is a sign unfortunately that Ryan has perhaps given up on the pool and is waiting until next season.

Grades:
+ Forwards (D): Ranks 9th in G, 11th in A. For every Datysuk, Naslund, Ribiero and Rolston there has been a Cheechoo, Vanek, Stafford and Straka to drop him down. All with high expectations and only half of them showing up to play is the problem.
+ Defence (C-): I actually really like Ryan's D. A team led by Lidstrom is always good in my books. That being said, there is a significant drop-off in the #5 spot downwards.
+ Goalies (C+): Ranks 9th in W, 10th in L. The tough loss of Fleury for an extended stretch produced a bright spot on the team with Tim Thomas. Having two goalies though on teams that don't win much these days is what hurt this grade.
+ Special Teams (D): Ranks 11th in PPG, 9th in PPA. If Sith and the Elbows get this low, there isn't a way I can justify too high a ranking in this area despite having Lidstrom.
+ Goon Factor (F): Ranks 12th in PIM. If you had a tough time guessing who led the team in PIMs for Paul, guess who gets the title for Ryan? Justin Williams. At least Paul had some guys that like to play rougher... I haven't seen this many visors since the Eyebrows ;)
+ Overall (D+): Ryan has 10 people that he can build off of quite easily and has a lot of assets that could garner Ryan a lot of valuable draft picks/upgraded keepers in the next 6 weeks. IMHO, this would be the best and fastest way to improve the team to be competitive next season.

Fur Engee (CP)

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Boomers (Paul)

Calgary (CP) Paul usually fields a strong team... so what has went so wrong this year?

Click Here to view Paul's Pre-Season Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
- Dan Boyle

Analysis:
The Boomers haven't missed many games, they have a decent set of forwards, defence and goalies... so why do they stand near last place? Bottom line is that there have been some major under-performers lead by Elias, Gionta, Demitra and Ruutu. Although there have been some good performers (Kovalev), people finding their groove (Penner) and some excellent surprises (Cullen), they cannot make up for the lack of production from their elite players.

Grades:
+ Forwards (D): Ranks 11th in G, 5th in A. I think I pretty much said it above... and just to drive home the point that Paul is frustrated, he has regularly dressed Ryan Kessler!
+ Defence (C+): The best part of the Boomers had to be the D. Its too bad that Boucher was out for so long or else this ranking would've been higher. A very solid bunch that I expect to improve in the second half.
+ Goalies (C): Ranks 7th in W, 1st in L. The injury to Backstrom and the continual flip-flopping in MTL really hurt Paul early on since he didn't get to maximize his GP. With the Wild goalie healthy and Price being sent down to the minors, this area will be a big PPT producer as the season winds down.
+ Special Teams (C-): Ranks 10th in PPG, 7th in PPA. Out of a roster of 28, 5 players account for >50% of his overall PPP. Where's the help?
+ Goon Factor (D+): Ranks 10th in PIM. Guess who the leading PIM getter is on the Boomers. Boucher? Nope. Commodore? Nah. Ruutu? Not a Chance. Its Saku Koivu. 'Nuff said.
+ Overall (C-): An extremely disappointing year so far for Paul with the point spread too much, Paul could possibly cash in on renting out players to the leaders to build for next season.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: GDC Bruins (Mike)

Calgary (CP) The Bruins have made some big deals that have help land them in first spot so far in the league. A place that I expect will be hard to displace him from come April.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Henrik Sedin
+ Zdeno Chara
- Daymond Langkow
- Michael Nylander

Analysis:
After the devastating loss of Patrice Bergeron early on in the season, the Bruins reacted quickly by bringing in Henrik Sedin. In addition, Mike finally landed his big stud defencemen in Chara that addresses concerns on the back-end on a team with few weak spots. It should surprise nobody that he on top of the pack.

Grades:
+ Forwards (A): Ranks 3rd in G, 1st in A. The B's may not have a lot of Superstars, but he has many high-end forwards capable of breaking the 100 PPt plateau this season. Boyes, Stillman, Parise and Lupul have all been excellent.
+ Defence (B+): Chara has really added so much to this corp that now boasts a revived Pitkanen and the rookie Johnson. As with the theme of his forwards, everyone is playing to their max potential.
+ Goalies (A): Ranks 3rd in W, 8th in L. After a slow start, Luongo is making another case for MVP. Between Roberto and Rick, the Bruins have no worries here since each will play a minimum of 70 games a piece.
+ Special Teams (B+): Ranks 3rd in PPG, 4th in PPA. Between Savard and Sedin, Mike will never have to worry about PPA. Its the production of Parise and Lupul on the PP that is really holding it together in this area though.
+ Goon Factor (C): Ranks 6th in PIMs. I really thought Johnson would have more of a mean streak. Ah well. Nothing lost to many of his competitors since there is a virtual tie in this category.
+ Overall (B+): According the the weightings/rankings, the Bruins and Leaf Haters are in an exact tie for Team Report Cards... with Kevin being within a "good night/bad night" combination striking distance in the standings that matter. Should be fun to watch both GMs battle it out heading down the stretch.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Flyin' Elbows (Mark)

Calgary (CP) Sorry Mark... this one's gonna hurt.

Click Here to view Mark's Pre-Season Team Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Dan Boyle
- Scott Niedermayer

Analysis:
In my Pre-Season analysis of Mark's team, I genuinely thought that Mark had a good chance of winning IF his team stayed healthy. Well, his team didn't stay healthy and I'm unsure how much higher he'd be in the rankings even if everyone was playing. The glaring holes on defence and in net are too much to overcome.

Grades:
+ Forwards (C): Ranks 6th in G, 12th in A. While having a ton of people that can put the puck in the net but not many people that can set them up, the Elbows have had a rash of injuries on the forward front that causes this ranking to drop. I actually really like a lot of his forwards, but they are no good if they are constantly on the IR.
+ Defence (F): Bouwmeester, MAB, Poti and Pothier have all been major disappointments this year. A nice deal to pick up Boyle was made but that will pay off next year. As long as he's on the IR, Mark has a lot of work to do in the area as he builds aroung J and Dan.
+ Goalies (F): Ranks 12th in W, 2nd in L. At the midway point, there was a 10 W spread between Mark and the next lowest ranked team. Emery is still hampered by the off season injury and Roloson unfortunately looks mediocre. Guess who the 3rd option is? Karri Ramo... yikes!
+ Special Teams (D-): Ranks 7th in PPG, 12th in PPA. This is a direct effect of the lack of PP defencemen on his team.
+ Goon Factor (D+): Ranks 11th in PIMs. Residing with a bunch of teams all within 40 PIMs of one another, Mark won't make up any ground in this area.
+ Overall (D): Since Mark has packed it in for this year and is playing for next, some of his injury-prone forwards may be held out as bait to help the higher teams push for title. Some more high draft picks would be optimal for Mark to claim some good defencemen that will become available next year.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Leaf Haters (Kevin)

Calgary (CP) Perennial GDHL contender Kevin landed OV-1 without adversely affecting his team... how the heck did that happen?

Click Here to view Kevin's Pre-Season Team Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Alexander Ovechkin
+ Chris Mason
+ Pascal Leclaire
- Evgeni Nabokov
- Tim Connolly

Analysis:
Not much to analyze here except that even though he lost Nabokov, he gained Ovechkin whom will be a keeper for him for the rest of the pool. He could afford to do this given the stellar play of Leclaire and Lundqvist. With an insurance policy of Mason, he will once again be there at the end and may repeat as GDHL champ.

Grades:
+ Forwards (A): Ranks 1st in G, 4th in A. With a combination of youth and experience, everyone is producing for the Leaf Haters with a 20+ G lead over the next best team.
+ Defence (B+): With 5 defencemen on their respective teams #1 PP unit, the D is a major contributing factor for points.
+ Goalies (A-): Ranks 4th in W, 12th in L. The tandem of Lundqvist and Leclaire have cooled off in the past 6 weeks but man were they spectacular in the first half. Pascal has 7 SO already and allowed Kwasny to make the deal for Alex. Funny thing is that I don't believe he will even keep the CLB netminder at year's end.
+ Special Teams (A): Ranks 2nd in PPG, 2nd in PPA. I always cringe when I see PIT score a PPG since either Whitney, Gonchar or Malkin's name is almost always attached to it. But it doesn't end there. Iggy, Hossa and Ovechkin just add to my headache.
+ Goon Factor (C-): Ranks 8th in PIMs. If there was one knock on the Leaf Haters is that they are soft. But they are also lumped together with 5 teams within a couple of PIMs to make this category not matter too much.
+ Overall (B+): A strong rating for a strong team that you can never discount. Should battle the Bruins for the GDHL title this season.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Airborne Attitude (Ken)

Calgary (CP) An overhaul to Ken's team has given the Attitude a new outlook for the upcoming years.

Click Here to view Ken's Pre-Season Team Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Dion Phaneuf
+ Ryan Getzlaf
+ Nic Antropov
+ Ryan Smyth
+ Milan Hejduk
+ Andrew Brunette
- Sidney Crosby
- John-Michael Liles
- Kari Lehtonen
- Jonathan Toews
- Patrick Kane
- Olli Jokinen

Analysis:
The number one concern for the Attitude going into the season was goaltending, which probably still needs to be addressed in future seasons. Overall though, his defence and offence is on average better than before but it came at a steep price of Sidney Crosby. Extremely surprising that Kane and Toews aren't on his team any longer but it has definitely paid off for him this year.

Grades:
+ Forwards (B-): Ranks 4th in G, 6th in A. Ken has a definite deeper crop of forwards than on opening day which have produced extremely well. Antropov has had a breakout season so far and Sundin is enjoying a great year with Blake's play improving.
+ Defence (B+): With the addition of Phaneuf, Ken has a formidable corp that includes Rafalski, Aucoin and Ohlund... all Top 3 D on their respective teams and all getting a lot of PP time. By and far the most improved area on the Attitude that will serve him well for the next few years.
+ Goalies (D+): Ranks 11th in W, 8th in L. Where would this area be without the FA Osgood? Bulin hasn't been getting it done and Manny has had some injuries that have forced Ken to rotate quite a bit in this position. This situation is still better than some other teams though *gulp*
+ Special Teams (C-): Ranks 8th in PPG, 8th in PPA. His D is getting the job done on the PP but his forwards aren't. I expect this to improve in the second half though as Shanahan and Hejduk get more playing time in the Attitude's lineup.
+ Goon Factor (A-): A very good mix of players that average 1 PIM/GP that will help Ken make up points big time in this area.
+ Overall (C+): Although there is no Crosby, the future looks good for Ken. He has some fundamental building blocks to improve on in the last 3 years mixed in with a veteran presence. I expect him to push for 5th place but may finish as low as 7th.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Sith (JW)

Calgary (CP) A gamble that didn't pay off has severely hurt JW's chances.

Click Here to view JW's Pre-Season Ranking.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Daniel Carcillo
- Peter Forsberg

Analysis:
The gamble to draft both Forsberg and Selanne has worked out in the worst possible scenario for JW with neither player seeing any ice in the foreseeable future. This was ~90PPt loss in players that could've been drafted in those positions and playing... which would've landed JW in 4th place. Instead, 135 PPt is the difference from first place and a possible sign of building for next year.

Grades:
+ Forwards (C): Ranks 9th in G, 8th in A. Outside of the top 5, there is a big drop-off. Thank goodness Heater and Alfie are around to carry the load with Gomez and Huselius showing signs of life. A good core to move forward with.
+ Defence (D+): After a nice move to pick up Zidlicky at last year's draft, Sith has a decent D-corp that includes Campbell and Meszaros. The only problem is that with exception to Marek and Brian, there are no other PP quarterbacks which adversely affect the Sith's Special Teams rating.
+ Goalies (B): Ranks 4th in W, 6th in L. With the departure of Bryzgalov, Sith now has 2 slam-dunk starters to play almost 60 games a piece. They may not earn a lot of shutouts, but they'll rack up the wins.
+ Special Teams (F): Ranks 12th in PPG, 11th in PPA. With a GDHL league low of 28% of total point coming on the PP (league average is 38%) JW has to be disappointed with how his team has performed with the man-advantage. There is a direct correlation between his lack of D playing on the PP but with almost a 100 PPP spread between the first place team and the Sith's PP totals, this is an area JW will be looking to improve on next year.
+ Goon Factor (B-): Ranks 5th in PIM. As long as Carcillo stays with the team it seems as though JW will be good in this department without giving too much offence. The rookie is the league PIM leader and can score the occasional goal too.
+ Overall (C): JW shouldn't be discouraged with his performance this season since I believe with some tweaking in minor areas (most notably on the PP) he should be able to move to the middle of the pack by next season.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: GGopher (Jordan)

Calgary (CP) A fast start to 2008 has Jordan buzzing for 4th place.

Click Here to view Jordan's Pre-Season Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Peter Forsberg
+ Lubomir Vishnovsky
- Mathieu Schneider
- Rod Brind'Amour

Analysis:
Jordan's love for the Kings has drawn him once again to pull the trigger on a big trade. This time to land the biggest King of them all in Vishnovsky whom has been extremely good to him. Having the best goalie tandem in the GDHL, Jordan is being patient with his group of forwards that have been average so far and needs to improve with any shot in the top 3.

Grades:
+ Forwards (C): Ranks 7th in G, 7th in A. Outside of the top 6 forward spots, positions 7th - 12th have really hurt the GGophers in the first half marred with inconsistent play and injuries. That being said, as long as Ilya stays hot and he gets more scoring from the Kings, he could stay in contention based on the strength of his goalies and D.
+ Defence (B): Blessed with 4 - 1+PPt/G defencemen, Jordan can use this flexibility to carry extra forwards. Lack of PPP is what brings this grade down a little.
+ Goalies (A): Ranks 2nd in W, 12th in L. Going into the season, this was his strength. After shaky starts by both Brodeur and Vokoun, they have played extremely well over the past 2 months to get GGopher within striking distance. Imagine how close he'd be if they played well right from the start?
+ Special Teams (C): Ranks 9th in PPG, 6th in PPA. Needs more PP production from the backend and more people that can put the puck in the net. But hey... doesn't everyone need that?
+ Goon Factor (C-): Ranks 9th in PIM. In a virtual tie with many teams in this category, there isn't much potential for growth here. Jovocop and Rivet will be the leaders on this team.
+ Overall (B-): It'll be interesting to see what Jordan does in the next 2 months before trade deadline. If he is able to land a keeper forward in the 6th spot without giving too much he may be able to gain some ground... otherwise "Go Kings Go".

Mid-Season Team Report Card: One Eyebrow (Ihor)

Calgary (CP) One Eyebrow's disappointing first half leads to some disappointing grades but a bright prospect of a strong second half.

Click Here to view Ihor's Pre-Season Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Mathieu Schneider
+ Olli Jokinen
+ Rod Brind'Amour
+ Petr Budaj
- Lubomir Vishnovsky
- Milan Hejduk
- Peter Forsberg

Analysis:
The always active Ihor has improved his roster from when it first opened. Rumour mill has it that there are at least 2 significant deals in place to help put the Eyebrows in high gear for the second half.

Grades:
+ Forwards (B): Ranks 5th in G, 3rd in A. On opening day, the Eyebrows had one of the most deep sets of forwards in the league. Major disappointments in Marleau (18 pts), Recchi (20 pts) and Avery (12 pts) have been equalled by nice surprises in Horcoff (35 pts) and Bouchard (32 pts) to balance things out.
+ Defence (B-): With Kaberle, McCabe and Schneider the Eyebrows D haven't been producing as expected on the PP. On the flip side, this group is capable of scoring in bunches since all of them play more than 20+Mins of TOI and get significant time on the PP.
+ Goalies (C+): Ranks 8th in W, 3rd in L. It took longer than expected for Toskala to win the starting job in T.O but shortly after this he got hurt. Turco has been ok but not a top 5 goalie (or top 10 for that matter) as expected.
+ Special Teams (B+): Ranks 4th in PPG, 3rd in PPA. Great PPP production from his forwards but as mentioned, the D have been a disappointment so far in this area. Looking for this area to once again improve in the second half of the season.
+ Goon Factor (C-): As Ken would say "Too many people with visors", the Eyebrows aren't taking as many PIMs as expected but they have potential. Avery, McCabe and Doan can rack them up with the best of them.
+ Overall (B-): Ihor finished 2007 on a good note that should carry into the new year. A deal for a keeper forward could help catapult him into contention by March... which I fully expect to happen.

Mid-Season Team Report Card: Whalers (Adam)

Calgary (CP) Now that we are at the halfway point, time to take a look at how each of the teams are doing. I've modified some sections from the previous report card. Hope you enjoy the read as I will try to be a tougher grader than before... and of course, toughest on myself at the end ;)

Click Here to view Adam's Pre-Season Report Card.

Significant Roster Changes:
+ Sidney Crosby
- Dion Phaneuf
- Ryan Getzlaf

Analysis:
Although giving up a lot, the Whalers landed the best franchise player possible and gives Adam a legit forward to build his team around. I'm sure Adam will agree that even though Zetterberg is good, his back has always been a problem and it is nice to breath easier with someone who can play every game.

Grades:
+ Forwards (C): Ranks 6th in G, 9th in A. The Whaler forwards have had a roller-coaster ride. This season has seen the development of young stars but may need a year or two more development to challenge in offensive categories. With Crosby though, this ranking will improve.
+ Defence (D+): Without Dion to anchor the D and Souray's injury problems, the Whalers have no real stars on the backend. If Adam can land one or two established defencemen using some of his younger star forwards, it may compensate for the loss of Phaneuf. Currently the defence contributes little to the Whalers offensive totals.
+ Goalies (A-): Ranks 1st in W, 4th in L. Kipprusoff looks to be his old self and as long as Biron and Gerber keep their end of the deal for the rest of the year, this will be the highlight of the Whalers season.
+ Special Teams (C-): Ranks 5th in PPG, 10th in PPA. With the loss of Souray and Dion, the special teams of the Whalers have taken a big hit. Crosby will make up some of the difference, but not all as the Penguins PP is run by Gonchar.
+ Goon Factor (C+): Ranks 3rd in PIMs. With the trading of Dion and Getzlaf, the Whalers also lost their two biggest PIM getters so their 3rd place ranking is deceiving. Ever since that trade, the Whalers PIM rate has declined and I suspect the rest of the pack to close that gap in 2 months.
+ Overall (C+): The Whalers are right in the middle of the pack, the exact place this blogger had them pegged. A 5th place battle should ensue between Ken and Jordan over the next couple of months for this team with a good outlook ahead.

GDHL: Player Power Rankings (December)

Calgary (CP) After much whining from many GMs on their players not appearing on previous iterations of the Power Rankings, note that I don't take the approach "What have you done lately" to judge. If I did that, you could just look at the NHL monthly awards. This list also takes into account impact to their respective GDHL team along with statistics. In addition, it is a cumulative ranking, so just because some players have a mediocre month doesn't necessarily warrant them dropping out from the rankings.

Forwards:
1. Vincent Lecavalier, TBL (N/C): Where would Tampa be without Vinny? He is involved in just over 50% of all Tampa goals, highest in the league. Combine that with the Art Ross lead and he is right now the best player in the league.

2. Ilya Kovalchuk, ATL (+4): A streaky player that is probably one of the most fun to watch. Re-asserting himself this season as the star of the team and has been the reason for the Thrashers turn around in the standings.

3. Jarome Iginla, CGY (N/C): The Flames only had 1 regulation loss in December and the combination of Iggy and Huselius has been the reason why. Jarome netted 14 G in December, which was most in the NHL, and next to Vinny has been the most consistent forward in the league.

4. Sidney Crosby, PIT (-2)
5. Henrik Zetterberg, DET (-1)
6. Jason Spezza, OTT (NEW)
7. Dany Heatley, OTT (+1)
8. Alexander Ovechkin, WAS (NEW)
9. Daniel Alfredsson, OTT (-4)
10. Pavel Datsyuk, DET (NEW)

Defencemen:
1. Chris Pronger, ANA (N/C): With the return of Scotty to the lineup, the ducks boast the best D-corp in the league. Pronger's value shouldn't dip at all since he'll still be playing the same minutes and PP time. The second best PPt total and a killer on the PP.

2. Dion Phaneuf, CGY (NEW): A young Pronger with similar numbers, Dion has had a huge December with his improved defensive play help the Flames challenge for the NW crown. We can definitely see why Ken wanted him so badly.

3. Brian Rafalski, DET (N/C): Has the most PPP amongst defencemen in the league and is only 2 points behind his teammate, Lidstrom, for the D scoring title. Shows amazing creativity and has proved to be an upgrade over Schneider for the Wings.

4. Sergei Gonchar, PIT (-2)
5. Nic Lidstrom, DET (N/C)

Goalies:
1. Evgeni Nabokov, SJS (+2): The top PPt getter also has the league lead in wins and had a huge December posting 10 victories. Right now, there is not much separating Luongo and Evgeni, but Roberto missed some time with an injury that has hurt his ranking.

2. Roberto Luongo, VAN (-1): Missed 5 games due to a sore hip but you wouldn't notice it the way he's been playing. Best goalie in the league and needs to be with the Canucks one line offence.

3. Tomas Vokoun, FLA (NEW): With the prospect of facing 30+ shots a game, Tomas has managed to keep the Panthers above .500 despite the teams offensive woes. Did the Preds pick the right guy? Me thinks not.

4. Martin Brodeur, NJD (+1)
5. Henrik Lundqvist, NYR (-3)

GDHL: GM Power Rankings (December)

Calgary (CP) November was hard to beat in terms of the amount of significant trades being made, but December did see some teams do some deals that have paid off right away. A tough month to judge because there has been a lack of activity.

1. Mike (N/C): Although December saw Mike's huge lead vanish as the Leaf Haters and Sather's Eyes both had huge months, it is tough to displace the No.1 team. His acquisition of Holmqvist didn't work out as planned but seemed like a good deal at the time. He keeps his ranking solely based on still being No.1 at the mid way point of the year after building one of the most well rounded teams.

2. Ihor (New): After being picked by this blogger to win the GDHL this year edging out Kevin, Ihor has had an extremely disappointing campaign so far... but there are signs of hope. Landing Jokinen for Hejduk and a FA was huge as Ihor continually does a good job of selling players when they have their highest value. For obtaining a keeper for the rest of pool, Ihor makes his debut in the rankings at #2. His team is gaining momentum and should come on strong in the second half. Whether at 70 PPt deficit is too much remains to be seen.

3. Kevin (N/C): The Leaf Haters made up 35+PPts on the Bruins in December and is closing in. As long as he continues to get good goaltending from either Leclaire or Bryzgalov he should be pushing for the lead by end of January as his players continue to score in bunches.

4. Adam (-2): This 4th place could've been occupied by either Jordan or Ken since there has been a lack of activity on every one's part. Adam gets the nod because of a higher ranking in November. Tough to rank a GM for simply "letting it ride".

Hoping for an exciting 2008.

GDHL: Player Power Rankings (November)

Calgary (CP) A great suggestion was brought forth by a colleague of mine that solves a big dilemma for me. The problem that I've been having is comparing impact of Forwards, Defencemen and Goalies. So for this month I'll attempt to separate them by specifying the Top 10 Forwards, Top 5 D and Top 5 Goalies with explanations for the top 3 and obviously no previous rankings listed. I'd like to collect feedback on how you like this format better than the other one since there are Pros and Cons to both. While the previous list is more of an MVP of the entire league, this one is "best in your position".

Forwards:
1. Vincent Lecavalier, TBL: A couple of months ago I wondered whether last season was an anomaly. This season he's showing that it was no fluke and when playing his game perhaps could give Crosby a good run for "Best Player in the League" title. Currently he leads the league in scoring but will probably be passed by Sid the Kid by X-mas. But out of this list, he has been the most consistent player so far this season.

2. Sidney Crosby, PIT: At this time of this post, it comes off the heels of a 4-2 PIT win over the Oil so I'm a little upset with him right now. That's the thing though, he does nothing for the first 2 periods and then sets up 3 in a 4 goal third to win. He's a superstar period.

3. Jarome Iginla, CGY: Question for all the Flamers out there... if Iggy doesn't score what is Calgary's record? I've often thought that without Kipper, the Flames are useless. I'd probably have to refine that to without Kipper OR Jarome the Flames are useless. He does everything for them... including fight.

4. Henrik Zetterberg, DET
5. Daniel Alfredsson, OTT
6. Ilya Kovalchuk, ATL
7. Mats Sundin, TOR
8. Dany Heatley, OTT
9. Rick Nash, CLB
10. Marc Savard, BOS

Defencemen
1. Chris Pronger, ANA: Placing second in overall PPts in the GDHL behind Vinny and ahead of Crosby, Chris is having an MVP type season. Over 70% of his points comes on the PP and he is 5th if defencemen scoring. He has his meanstreak again and when healthy solidifies his ranking at No.1.

2. Sergei Gonchar, PIT: There is a lot of credit that goes to Ryan Whitney being the young stud on D but without Gonchar as his partner one wonders if he'd have as much success. Almost all Whitney goals and assists have Gonchar's name attached to it... not the other way around. Without Sergei, PIT's defence would be very suspect.

3. Brian Rafaslki, DET: Being an offensive defencemen, I'm sure that Brian was relieved to get out of Jersey. What a difference a coach makes as Brian holds his own with Nic providing the Wings with a scary PP.

4. Zdeno Chara, BOS
5. Nic Lidstrom, DET

Goalies:
1. Roberto Luongo, VAN: Powered by 3 consecutive SO, he is solely responsible for the Canucks turnaround this season and the GDC Bruins. He is finally playing up to his normal standards and should earn Vancouver a second consecutive NW division crown.

2. Henrik Lundqvist, NYR: After a strong October, Henrik continued his great play. Now that the Rangers offence has finally figured itself out, the Rangers are rolling. By year's end, expect him to be another Vezina finalist.

3. Evgeni Nabokov, SJS: Not much is being written on the Sharks this season with so many other things happening in the league. Meanwhile, Nabokov has gone 7-1-3 in his last 11 to quietly park the Sharks in their usual position... near the top of the league. The Sharks made the right choice between him and Vesa.

4. Pascal Leclaire, CLB
5. Martin Brodeur, NJD

GDHL: GM Power Rankings (November)

Calgary (AP) November was an interesting month to say the least. A lot of roster changes that saw the best player in the league (Crosby) and some star defencemen move. This month's ranking will be tough... but here it goes:

1. Mike (+3): As I told the commish himself, November saw the biggest smackdown in the history of the league with a spread of 70+PPTs between the Bruins and the next best point total for November. Fluke? I don't think so. The Bruins were reportedly outraged at both sets of Power Rankings in October for many exclusions to the list. Well that must have been some pep talk Mike gave his troops because they got even where it counted. The addition of Chara and Henrik "I wish I was as good as Daniel" Sedin might have gone under the radar to some... but these two has addressed the injury to Bergeron and have given the Bruins a big name on D that was sorely missing.

2. Adam (N/C): Even though Adam has taken a harsh hit in the standings as his players are now back to normal, Adam keeps this ranking solely based on his scooping of Crosby from the likes of both the Sather's Eyes and One Eyebrow. Both competing GMs called GDHL head office to see if the dealings were legit and have contacted their lawyers that may call out the Whalers and Airborne for compensatory damages for mental anguish. Good job Adam on landing the best player in the league!

3. Kevin (-1): An uneventful November for Kevin after the acquisition of Ovechkin saw the Bruins surge past the Anti-Leafs. Even though he has fallen into second place, knowing his M.O. he has one or two deals in the works that should make up for the gap quickly.

4. Ken (-1): Ken has taken the title of most active GM from Ihor by making several trades to try and stay competitive. This definitely has kept the league interesting and earns him a spot on this list simply because of the lack of activity from other teams. Whether the trades he has made so far are good ones will play themselves out over the course of the next 3 years but for now they have kept him not too far behind the top 3 teams and is closing in on the Whalers. Anyone want to take a guess on how many official deals the Shamrocks and Attitude will complete by years end? I'll place my bets in the 15 - 16 range ;)
